Why it is toxic

Lycorine and related alkaloids plus oxalate crystals; the bulb is by far the most toxic part

How fast symptoms appear: 15 minutes to a few hours

Symptoms of poisoning
  • Severe vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Drooling
  • Low blood pressure
  • Tremors
  • Irregular heartbeat after bulb ingestion
What to do first
  1. Phone the vet, and go in if a bulb was chewed rather than a leaf or flower.
  2. Estimate how many bulbs are missing and bring the packaging.
  3. Fence off the bed โ€” dogs typically return to dig again.
What your vet will do
Decontamination if recent, intravenous fluids, anti-sickness medication and cardiac monitoring.
